Oblique cylinder and cone
Draw an oblique cone of radius 3 u, height 8 u and axis inclined 65° to the PH. The bases are perpendicular to the axis.
Step-by-step solution
- The base is a circle in a plane perpendicular to the axis; being inclined, it looks like an ellipse in both views.
- The apparent outline is drawn tangent to the two bases (cylinder) or from the apex to the base (cone).
- The generators join corresponding points of the two bases and are no longer vertical.
- Check that the axis passes through the centres of the bases and the height is measured along the axis.
Result: oblique cone: radius 3 u, height 8 u, axis at 65° to the PH; volume 74.54 u³.
If the bases are perpendicular to the axis, tilting it makes them stop looking like circles: they become ellipses.
