Nets

Net

It is unfolding the faces of the solid onto a plane. Each face appears in true size and joined to the next by an edge.

Net of a right prism

Lateral faces in a row

Draw as many rectangles as the prism has faces, side by side. The base of each one is the side of the polygon and the height is that of the prism.

Check: the width of the lateral net must equal the perimeter of the base. If it does not add up, you rounded wrong or a face is missing.

Nets that come up

Besides the right prism:

  • Right pyramid: a central polygon (the base) and as many isosceles triangles as lateral faces, with the apothem of the pyramid in true size.
  • Right cone: a circular sector with radius equal to the generator g. The arc measures 2·π·r, so the sector angle is 360°·r/g.
  • Right cylinder: a rectangle of base 2·π·r and height h, plus two circles.
